While a 4×4 vehicle is ideal due to the poor road conditions, an ordinary car can do just fine. But during the rainy season, roads can get pretty rough, which might seriously lengthen your travel time.
Second option is to take a bus + boat + taxi. You can take a bus from Ilhéus to Camamu, a journey of about 3 hours. From Camamu, board a fast boat to Barra Grande.
