Ever dreamt of sipping on exquisite wines while surrounded by breathtaking landscapes? Welcome to your wine tour from Tbilisi to Kakheti! This guide is perfect for those who crave both the romance of vineyards and the thrill of exploration. Whether you’re an organized tour enthusiast or a DIY adventurer, this post will help you design the perfect itinerary.
How to do a wine tour to Kakheti from Tbilisi?
Imagine waking up to the promise of lush vineyards and the rich aroma of Georgian wines. Located just a couple of hours from Tbilisi, Kakheti is Georgia’s premier wine region. Embarking on this adventure means leaving behind the hustle of city life for the serene and charming countryside.
Choosing Organised Wine Tour
Deciding how to explore Kakheti is your first step. You can join one of the many organized tours departing from Tbilisi if you prefer a hassle-free experience. These tours offer a pre-planned itinerary, complete with wine tastings and cultural stops. These tours are ideal for those who prefer a stress-free experience, allowing you to fully indulge in the wine without worrying about transportation or itineraries.
But if you’re like me and enjoy a bit more freedom, planning your own route might be the way to go. This allows you to tailor the experience to your preferences, ensuring you make the most of your day.
Organizing an Independent Wine Tour
For those seeking independence and a touch of adventure, organizing your own wine tour allows you to explore Kakheti at your own pace. The simplest way to do this is by booking a GoTrip car, which includes a driver and vehicle for 24 hours. This option provides the flexibility to stop wherever you please while ensuring that you can fully enjoy the wine-tasting experience without the need to drive.
The cost of hiring a GoTrip car ranges from 200-250 GEL, offering a cost-effective solution for a full day of exploration. With your own driver, you can visit both well-known and hidden gems, creating a diverse itinerary that captures the true essence of Kakheti.
If you prefer to drive yourself, renting a car is another option. However, keep in mind that indulging in wine tasting may not mix well with driving responsibilities.
Unveiling Kakheti’s Wine Secrets
Kakheti isn’t just about gorgeous views; it’s the heart of Georgia’s wine culture. Let’s explore some must-visit wineries and attractions in the area.
Wine Yard N1
Our first stop was a charming family-run vineyard called Wine Yard N1. This place is perfect for those wanting an authentic experience. The tour includes an incredible Georgian lunch paired with unlimited wine, all for just 80 GEL. The homemade wines here have a distinct character, reflecting the region’s rich winemaking traditions.

Kindzmarauli Marani
Next, we ventured to Kindzmarauli Marani, a larger winery known for its extensive range of wines. Here, we indulged in a tour and tasting session featuring four different wines. Our driver highly recommended this spot, and it did not disappoint.
In the vicinity, you’ll find other popular wineries like Khareba Winery. I would recommend to select at least one of these bigger wine producers to complete your wine experience.

More Than Just Wine
Beyond the vineyards, Kakheti is home to stunning architecture and historical sites.
The Beauty of Nekresi Monastery
Nekresi Monastery is a must-see, offering panoramic views that are simply mesmerizing. The tranquility here is palpable, making it a perfect spot for reflection between wine tastings.

Gremi’s Archangel’s Complex
Another historical gem is Gremi’s Archangel’s complex. Its towers and ancient walls transport you back in time, offering a glimpse into Georgia’s storied past.

Exploring Telavi
Telavi, the heart of Kakheti, is a charming city worth exploring. Wander its streets, try local delicacies, and soak in the vibrant atmosphere. If time allows, Tsinandali Estate is a sophisticated wine venue nearby that we plan to visit on our next trip. You can also stay night at the Tsinandali Estate.

On our way back, we also stopped at the Dzveli Shuamta Monastery.
Consider Sighnaghi
If you’re an early riser, consider beginning your journey in Sighnaghi, often referred to as the “City of Love.” Its picturesque streets offer a perfect start to your Kakheti experience.
When to Visit Kakheti?
Timing is key when planning your Kakheti wine tour. While the region is beautiful year-round, certain seasons offer unique experiences. Spring and early autumn are particularly enchanting, with mild weather and vibrant landscapes enhancing your travels.
Harvest season, which typically occurs in late September and early October, is a special time in Kakheti. During this period, you’ll witness the grape harvest and experience the bustling energy of winemaking first-hand. However, tours are popular during this time, so booking in advance is advisable.
