5 Best things to do in Sigiriya

1. Climb to Sigiriya’s Lion Rock

Sigiriya’s Lion Rock, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is hands-down the most popular tourist attraction in Sri Lanka.

Nestled in the country’s central province, this grand rock fortress was constructed by King Kasyapa I in the 5th century AD. The architectural, design, and engineering wonders of this ancient city continue to awe visitors.

The name “Sigiriya,” translating to “Lion Rock,” originates from an enormous lion figure carved into the rock’s entrance.

The current entrance fee stands at $30 (as of September 2023).

Standing 200 meters high, Lion Rock offers a challenging but rewarding climb of over 1200 steps leading to breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.

While the climb might be a bit strenuous, the panoramic view and the rich historical tapestry of the palace complex, which once served as a royal residence, monastery, and fortress, make the effort wholly worthwhile.

2. Safari Adventure in Kaudulla or Minneriya National Park

Nature enthusiasts must visit Kaudulla or Minneriya National Park. Experience an exhilarating safari and witness Sri Lanka’s incredible wildlife up close.

Kaudulla National Park is a biodiversity hotspot with diverse animal species. From majestic elephants to elusive leopards and vibrant birdlife, you can observe these creatures in their natural habitat.

A highlight of Kaudulla National Park is the annual Elephant Gathering. Hundreds of elephants gather around the park’s reservoir, bathing and socializing peacefully. It’s a humbling experience that showcases the wonders of nature.

We took a half-day tour that started at 1pm and returned to Sigiriya around 6pm. It was a pleasant experience, and we felt that a full-day tour would have been too long.

We paid 15,000 LKR for a jeep accommodating 4-5 people. Additionally, there is an entrance fee to the national park, which amounted to 41,000 LKR for our group of 4. The total price per person came to 14,000 LKR (40 €, as of September 2023).

->Tip! The weather can get quite hot, especially if it’s sunny, with no shade or water available. So, remember to bring plenty of water and apply sunscreen before the trip.

As you step into Dambulla Cave Temple, prepare to be transported into a world steeped in spirituality and devotion. The temple complex consists of five caves adorned with intricate murals and over 150 statues of Buddha—a testament to centuries-old religious practices.

Each cave within Dambulla holds its own unique treasures. From colossal statues depicting various stages of Buddha’s life to awe-inspiring ceiling paintings illustrating significant events from Buddhist folklore, every corner reveals a new marvel waiting to be discovered.

In addition to the captivating caves, Dambulla Temple offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. As you ascend to the top, take a moment to savor the serenity and appreciate the beauty of Sri Lanka’s landscapes stretching out before you—a truly awe-inspiring sight.

The admission fee for September 2023 is 2000 LKR (equivalent to 5.8€). Moreover, they provide the opportunity to hire a guide for an additional 2000 LKR (prices may vary and are negotiable). We chose to hire a guide, which was a wonderful way to learn about the history and culture of the place.

When visiting the temple, it is necessary to ensure that shoulders and knees are covered. If needed, you can rent a sarong for a fee of 100 LKR.

4. Exploring the Ancient City of Polonnaruwa

Step back in time as you explore the ancient city of Polonnaruwa—a UNESCO World Heritage Site that showcases the grandeur and architectural excellence of medieval Sri Lanka.

Polonnaruwa served as the capital of Sri Lanka from the 11th to 13th centuries, leaving behind a wealth of archaeological wonders. Explore intricately carved stone temples, royal palaces, and towering dagobas (stupas) that stand as testaments to a glorious past.

Located approximately 60km from Sigiriya, Polannaruwa is just a short car ride away, taking about 1 hour to reach. It serves as a perfect day trip destination from Sigiriya, but for a more immersive experience, consider staying overnight in Polonnaruwa, as we did.

A lot of individuals opt for renting a bicycle to explore the city. However, if you choose to rent a tuk-tuk, as we did, it offers a great alternative that saves time, especially considering that some of the attractions are quite far from the main area of Polonnaruwa. Additionally, parking your tuk-tuk near the main sights is convenient and hassle-free.

Because the ancient city of Pollonnaruwa is really big complex, exploring the area would require a minimum of 3-4 hours, and if you wish to see everything, especially by bike, you could easily spend an entire day there.

5. Hiking Pidurangala Rock

Located just a short distance from Sigiriya’s Lion Rock, Pidurangala offers an alternative perspective on this iconic region.

One of the highlights of hiking Pidurangala Rock is witnessing a breathtaking sunrise from its summit. As the first rays of light paint the sky with hues of orange and gold, the landscape below gradually comes to life, revealing the beauty of Sigiriya and its surroundings in all their glory.

The hike uphill typically takes around 30 minutes to an hour, although some people can complete it even faster. The descent, on the other hand, usually takes about 15 minutes. So, plan to spend approximately 2 hours hiking and immersing yourself in the breathtaking views and natural beauty.

The entrance fee for Pidurangala Rock (500 LKR/1.5€) is much more affordable compared to Lion Rock, which is why many people choose to visit Pidurangala instead. So, if you’re on a budget but still want to enjoy the stunning views of Sigiriya, Pidurangala Rock is the way to go. However, we recommend visiting both if you have the time and resources, as Lion Rock offers more than just scenic beauty.

Where to stay in Sigiriya?

There are several options for accommodation in Sigiriya, catering to different budgets and preferences. For those seeking a luxurious stay, there are 5-star resorts and boutique hotels offering stunning views of Sigiriya’s landscape. These accommodations often come with amenities such as spas, swimming pools, and fine dining restaurants.

For budget travelers, there are also plenty of guesthouses and homestays available in the area. These accommodations offer a more authentic experience, allowing visitors to interact with local families and immerse themselves in Sri Lankan culture.

For a pleasant and comfortable stay, you can find double rooms in guesthouses or homestays with air conditioning for around 10 euros per night. If you’re looking for a touch of luxury, there are beautiful hotels and resorts available for between 100-200 euros per night. You might even come across special deals for less than 100 euros per night.

Where to eat in Sigiriya?

Breakfast and brunch

There are numerous guesthouses and hotels in Sigiriya that offer breakfast either included in the price or for an additional fee. However, if you prefer exploring other options, there are plenty of fantastic breakfast spots in the area.

One place that stands out is Espresso Italiano, where you can indulge in the best cappuccino in Sigiriya while enjoying breathtaking views of the iconic Lion Rock.

For a delightful brunch experience, our top recommendation is Cappuccino Bistro. Not only is the restaurant exquisitely beautiful, but the food is also absolutely delicious.

Dinner

There is a wide range of restaurants that offer diverse cuisines, from local delicacies to Western fare.

When should I visit Sigiriya?

Good time to visit is during the dry season, from May to September. You’ll enjoy clear blue skies and pleasant temperatures, perfect for outdoor activities like hiking Pidurangala Rock. Just remember, it’s peak tourist season, so it’s a good idea to book your accommodations and activities ahead of time.

If you prefer to avoid crowds and don’t mind some rain, visiting Sigiriya during the off-season (October-April) can also be a good option. November is typically the rainiest month of the year.

Regardless of the season, it’s best to avoid visiting Sigiriya during Buddhist holidays, as the site can get extremely crowded with locals making pilgrimages.

How long to stay in Sigiriya?

As for how long to stay in Sigiriya, we recommend spending at least 2-3 days in order to fully experience the area. This will allow you to explore the Lion Rock and other nearby attractions such as the ancient city of Polonnaruwa and Kaudulla National Park.

How to get to Sigiriya?

From Negombo

We highly recommend renting a tuktuk and embarking on a scenic drive to Negombo. The distance is approximately 150km, which will take around 4-5 hours. As you approach Sigiriya, you’ll be captivated by the breathtaking beauty of nature. Keep an eye out for elephants along the road, just like we had the pleasure of witnessing.

From Colombo

To reach Sigiriya from Colombo, you have several options. The most convenient is taking a direct taxi or private car hire; the journey will take around 3-4 hours, but it’s the most comfortable and quickest way to get there.

If you prefer public transportation, you can opt for the bus or train.

The bus from Colombo to Dambulla takes about 5-6 hours, and from there you can take a local bus or tuk-tuk to Sigiriya, which is about a 30-minute ride.

Alternatively, you can take the train from Colombo to Habarana, which takes about 6 hours, and then a tuk-tuk or cab from Habarana to Sigiriya, which is approximately a 15-20 minute ride. Both the bus and train journeys offer a unique experience to witness the vibrant local life and captivating scenery of Sri Lanka.

From Trincomalee

If you’re coming from the eastern coast of Sri Lanka, such as Trincomalee, we recommend taking a taxi or private car. The drive will take around 3 hours and offers stunning views along the way.
