How to get to Usghuli?
Despite its remote location, Usghuli is accessible by road. The most convenient way to reach Usghuli is via private transport. Although Gotrip doesn’t list Usghuli as a destination, you can contact them to request a ride all the way to Usghuli instead of Mestia.
I heard that the road to Usghuli was in terrible condition, but it wasn’t as bad as I expected. Only the last 5 km were rough, but I’ve encountered far worse roads. Overall, it was much better than anticipated.
If you want to save money by using public transport, start by reaching Mestia. From there, you can arrange private transport to Ushguli, which will take about 1.5 hours. Alternatively, minivans are available as a more budget-friendly option.
We first traveled to Mazeri village, located just 30 minutes from Mestia, where our guesthouse arranged private transportation to Usghuli. Most guesthouses can organize transport for you. The journey from Mazeri to Usghuli cost 350 GEL.
Numerous tours from Tbilisi to Mestia also include a visit to Ushguli. Additionally, during the summer, you can embark on a multi-day hike from Mestia to Ushguli.
How to get to Mestia?
There are several ways to reach Mestia:
Private Transport:
The most convenient option is to hire a driver through Gotrip. The cost is approximately 400 GEL from Batumi and higher from Tbilisi. This choice allows for multiple stops along the way, letting you fully appreciate the journey. The drive from Batumi to Mestia is incredibly scenic, making the 5-hour trip pass quickly. The journey from Tbilisi to Mestia takes about 7-8 hours without stopping.
Tip: Consider stopping in Kutaisi for a night. This allows you to explore attractions like the Prometheus Caves and Martvili Canyon on your way to Mestia.
Train and Marshrutka:
Travel to Zugdidi by train from Tbilisi (approximately 6 hours, costing 16-48 GEL) or by marshrutka from Batumi (around 3 hours). Upon arrival in Zugdidi, take a marshrutka to Mestia. These marshrutkas conveniently wait at the Zugdidi train station for the train’s arrival. The journey from Zugdidi to Mestia takes about 4 hours and costs approximately 40-50 GEL.
What to do in Usghuli?
Wander around the village
As you wander around Ushguli, you can’t help but feel like you’ve stepped back in time. The village is made up of several small communities, each with its own unique charm and character. Explore the narrow cobbled streets and traditional Svan towers, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Walk to the Viewpoint
Near Lamar Church, there is a delightful viewpoint overlooking the village and the valley beyond. It is the perfect spot to capture stunning photos and admire the beautiful surroundings.
Eat traditional food
Ushguli has a few small restaurants that serve delicious traditional Georgian food. Be sure to try the local specialty, Kubdari , a savory meat pie filled with seasoned beef or pork or Khachapuri, a cheese-filled bread that is popular throughout Georgia. Also locally made yogurt is exceptionally delicious!
Visit the Ethnographic Museum
The Ushguli Ethnographic Museum is a great place to learn about the history and culture of Svaneti. The museum is housed in an original Svan tower and features exhibits on traditional life, household items, and cultural traditions of the village.
Stay at one of the guesthouses
For an authentic experience, consider staying in one of the traditional guesthouses in Ushguli. The locals are known for their warm hospitality and you’ll have a chance to immerse yourself in the local way of life. Plus, staying in a guesthouse is also a great way to support the local community.
Go hiking
Ushguli is surrounded by stunning mountains and offers some of the best hiking opportunities in Georgia. There are various trails to choose from, ranging from easy strolls to challenging multi-day treks. Along the way, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of glaciers, waterfalls, and alpine lakes.
We didn’t have time to do hiking in Usghuli but it’s on our list for the next trip.
Horseback riding
Horseback riding is also a popular activity in Ushguli, offering a unique way to explore the surrounding nature.
Best time to visit Usghuli
The best time to visit Usghuli is during the summer months, from June to September, when the weather is warm and dry. This allows for easier access to the village and more opportunities for outdoor activities such as hiking.
However, if you’re looking to experience the unique winter culture of Usghuli, then visiting during the colder months can be just as rewarding. The village is covered in snow and offers a picturesque setting for travelers.
We visited in mid-May. The daytime weather was pleasantly warm under the sun, though it became chilly in the afternoon and in the shade. As temperatures dropped close to 0 degrees at night, remember to pack adequate clothing.
How long to stay in Usghuli?
Ushguli village is small enough to explore in a single day. However, if you plan to hike in the surrounding areas, I recommend staying for 2-3 nights.
Where to stay in Usghuli?
Usghuli lacks luxury hotels and spas. If modern amenities are your preference, staying in Mestia and taking a day trip to Usghuli is a better option. In Usghuli, you’ll find numerous family-run guesthouses and cozy cabins. We stayed at the Old House Guesthouse and had an incredible experience. The beautiful old house is managed by exceptionally friendly hosts. Dinner was delightful, with an abundance of food that we couldn’t finish. I highly recommend spending at least one night in Usghuli.
