Located in the Southeastern region of Sri Lanka, Yala National Park boasts a rich biodiversity with its variety of ecosystems such as forests, grasslands, and wetlands. With over 215 bird species, 44 mammal species, countless reptiles and insects, and breeding crocodile species, it is a haven for wildlife lovers.

The park is also home to the highest density of leopards in the world, making it a must-visit for any big cat enthusiast.

Yala National Park Safari tour

Many hotels and guesthouses offer safari tours. We specifically wanted to see leopards, so we searched for a tour that specializes in leopard spotting. We came across an excellent company called Shehan Safari which had received great reviews. The jeep was top-notch and the driver was highly professional. During the tour, we successfully achieved our goal and spotted 3 leopards, along with numerous elephants, crocodiles, deers, wild pigs, monkeys, and various bird species.

You have the option to choose between a half-day or full-day tour. We found the half-day tour to be sufficient since we had already done a safari in Sri Lanka and planned to do more. The half-day tour starts at either 6am or 2pm and lasts around 4 hours. We recommend taking the morning tour as it’s not as hot yet and there’s a better chance of spotting leopards in the early morning compared to the afternoon.

The Jeep rate for 2 people was 48 USD and the ticket price to enter the park was 78 USD. The total price for the half-day safari was 126 USD for 2 people. You can find tours that are slightly cheaper or more expensive.

Do you need a guide to visit Yala National Park?

A guide is not required to visit Yala National Park, but we highly recommend hiring one. The park is quite large and it can be challenging to spot wildlife on your own. A guide will have extensive knowledge of the park and its inhabitants, making it easier for you to spot animals and learn about their behaviors.

In addition, guides are also well-trained in safety measures and can alert you of any potential dangers. They will also provide interesting insights about the park’s history, flora, and fauna.

Warning! Following our safari, we encountered an aggressive elephant next to our accommodation. Curiosity got the better of us, and we ventured bit too close, only to find ourselves running for our lives. Elephants are undeniably adorable creatures, usually known for their friendliness. However, it is crucial to remember that they are wild animals. In Sri Lanka, approximately 70-80 people lose their lives each year due to encounters with elephants.
