One traditional and best activities in Finland during winter is ice swimming. It might sound a bit crazy, but trust us, it’s an amazing experience! Be ready to become addicted!
Tampere is known as the sauna capital of the world with over 50 public saunas in the region. So, experiencing a sauna is definitely a must-do when visiting Tampere!
Rauhaniemen sauna is one of the most famous public saunas and ice swimming spots in Tampere. It’s conveniently located just 2km from the city centre, next to a peaceful and beautiful lake. For that reason, it can get very crowded during peak times.
Rauhaniemi is open daily throughout the year. A single sauna ticket costs 10€. Additionally, there is an option to experience the tranquil Saunatemple for an extra fee.
Kaupinojan Sauna is another traditional sauna (since 1977) you can find on the same Lake (Näsijärvi), 15 min walking distance from Rauhaniemi. It’s located at one of our favourite spots in Tampere. You can see amazing sunsets from there and the prices are pretty much the same.
Pereensaaren sauna is a recently opened sauna near Tampere. If you’re interested in a more upscale option, give it a try. They also offer the option to go to the Avanto during winter
If you’re looking for an authentic Finnish sauna experience, give it a try. You can bring your own drinks and they even have a grill for cooking sausages. There isn’t a more traditional way to experience sauna and avanto in Finland than having a beer and a sausage (Olut ja makkara). Sappee stands out as a well-known ski hub close to Tampere, a mere 50-minute drive away. Tuesdays offer discounted ski lift tickets and equipment rentals. While larger than Mustavuori, Sappee is a smaller center compared to Himos.

How to get to Tampere?
Tampere is easily accessible via different modes of transportation.
If you’re coming from abroad, Helsinki International Airport is located approximately 170km away. From there, you can take a train to Tampere, which takes around 2 hours. To reach Tampere, you’ll need to change trains at Tikkurila.
Tampere also has its own international airport with direct flights to some cities in Europe such as Riga, Copenhagen and Amsterdam.
You can also travel to Tampere city centre by train or bus from various cities in Finland.
Getting around Tampere
Tampere city centre is quite small and can easily be explored on foot.
However, if you prefer public transportation, or want to explore outside of central Tampere, the local bus and tram network offers an efficient and affordable way to get around. You can download an app to search for schedules and buy tickets. You can also take a train to cities nearby.
In spring and summer, you have the option to rent city bikes for convenient city transportation.
