1. Surfing

Let’s talk about Arugam Bay and its amazing surf scene. This quiet fishing village on Sri Lanka’s southeast coast is the place to be if you’re into surfing. Unlike the west coast, Arugam Bay remains mostly unaffected by heavy monsoons, making it a top choice for surfers of all levels during the main surfing season from April to September. Although you can find some waves throughout the year, the likelihood of encountering rainy and flat days, during the low season, increases exponentially.

With a variety of breaks and stunning scenery, like Main point, Baby point, Whiskey point, Pottuvil point, Elephant Rock point and Peanut farm, it’s a paradise for wave riders. Looking for an affordable surf trip? A Bay has got you covered – it’s one of the world’s cheapest destinations for catching those epic waves. For beginners and intermediates, it’s easy to find boards to rental for the range of 500-1500 rupees/day. Better surfboards for more advanced surfers are (not easily) found for 1500-2000 rupees/day.

2. Elephant Rock

Elephant Rock in Arugam Bay is a gem, known for its striking rock formation resembling an elephant. This surf haven attracts both beginners and intermediate surfers with exhilarating yet manageable waves.

To reach this paradise, follow the directions to Arugam Bay and head towards the beach area where Elephant Rock majestically stands.

Elephant Rock is not only a surf spot but also a wildlife sanctuary. Look out for elephants casually strolling and sunbathing crocodiles. An adventure that combines the thrill of surfing with the breathtaking beauty of nature.

3. Yoga Classes

Arugam Bay is also a haven for yoga enthusiasts, offering a variety of classes that cater to both beginners and advanced practitioners. The serene environment, coupled with the gentle sound of crashing waves, provides an ideal setting for rejuvenating one’s body, mind, and spirit. A yoga class here is sure to enhance your holistic Arugam Bay experience.

There are numerous yoga options conveniently located on Main Road, all in close proximity to one another.

One aspect that we truly appreciate is the availability of yoga classes throughout the day. Starting from as early as 7 am, there are sessions at 8 am, 9 am, and 10 am, with some even offering a second session at 4 pm and 5 pm. This flexibility ensures that you can always find a yoga class that perfectly aligns with your schedule. It seems that they intentionally avoid competing with each other, which is quite admirable.

4. Kudumbigala Monastery

The Kudumbigala Monastery, situated in the peaceful outskirts of Arugam Bay, is a tranquil retreat dating back to 246 BC. This historical site offers visitors a glimpse into the region’s rich Buddhist heritage, nestled within a scenic landscape adorned with over 200 rock monoliths. A visit here offers a serene respite from the bustling activities of the bay.

When hiking to Kudumbigala Monastery, it’s important to wear sturdy shoes for the rocky and uneven terrain. Bring enough water and snacks since there are no facilities along the way. Start early morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat, and take breaks to admire the breathtaking views of Arugam Bay. Remember to respect the peaceful atmosphere of the monastery.

Be cautious of the wildlife you may encounter and take necessary precautions.

5. Lagoon Safari in Pottuvil

Just 4km away from Arugam Bay, you’ll discover a hidden wildlife gem: the Pottuvil Lagoon. This 200-acre lagoon offers an unforgettable safari experience, lasting approximately 2-2 ½ hours.

Sail along the untouched waters, encompassed by verdant mangrove forests. Be amazed by playful Sri Lanka macaque monkeys in the treetops, and keep a lookout for majestic elephants refreshing themselves in the evening. Spotting crocodiles sunbathing adds to the thrill of this expedition.

Don’t overlook this incredible chance to witness the marvels of nature at Pottuvil Lagoon.

6. Muhudu Maha Viharaya

Visiting the Muhudu Maha Viharaya is a must for history enthusiasts. This ancient Buddhist temple, located in Sri Lanka, offers a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of the country with its impressive architecture and serene surroundings.

The complex consists of four main stupas, built around the 4th century BC. Each stupa is adorned with intricate carvings that are up to 2,000 years old and represent Buddhism’s core teachings. Traveling from Colombo Airport to Arugam Bay offers 4 main options: renting a tuk tuk, private taxi, public bus or train+bus.

1.We highly recommend the best option for traveling there: taking an Uber from the airport to Negombo, spend a night there to rest after your long flight, and then renting a tuk tuk. While you can’t go all the way to A Bay by tuk tuk, you can make stops along the way to experience the local way of life. Stay in home stays, dine at local restaurants, and immerse yourself in the authentic local culture.

2. Taking a private taxi is a convenient choice, covering a distance of approximately 320 kilometers through scenic routes. The cost ranges from LKR 18,000 to LKR 25,000, and the journey takes around 7 to 9 hours.

3.Alternatively, public buses are available, but there is no direct route. Overnight buses from Colombo to Akkaraipattu or a public bus to Pottuvil are options, though they are less comfortable and more time-consuming.
